Who We Are

Mission: We serve individuals with spinal cord injuries/disease (SCI/D) in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia through advocacy, recreational  opportunities, and community resources.

Vision: The Metro DC Chapter is focused on increasing awareness, and assisting those impacted by SCI/D maximize their independence and improve quality of life.

United Spinal DC is the local chapter of the United Spinal Association for the national capital region. We are also closely affiliated with the Medstar National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) network, whose generous sponsorship makes our programming possible.

What We Do

Advocacy: Some of our work includes advocating for laws and policies affecting our members and their families. For example, disability activists were instrumental in blocking a recent healthcare law that would have reduced medicaid funding and removed protections for pre-existing conditions. Read more on our Blog.

Community Building: We aim to create a community for people with SCI/D and their families so we can share, learn and grow from our shared experiences. People with disabilities are often the best resource for each other for issues from home adaptation to healthcare. Check our events calendar, sign up for our newsletter or browse the forum to join the community.

Sports and Recreation: A healthy life is a happy life and staying active is key to your health, especially after a spinal cord injury. United Spinal DC works closely with Medstar NRH to provide adaptive fitness and sports programs for people with disabilities. Check our resources page to learn more and get involved.
